The Maroubra Girl
Set in Sydney's eastern suburbs during the 1950's around the illegal gambling scene, the story explores the relationship between a young prostitute Narelle, and an unworldly young man Seumas. When their relationship becomes unbearably fraught Seumas heads for Australia's Northern Territory. Still very much in love, he returns to Sydney hoping to reconcile with Narelle.
Passage:
He took a big breath. "I really do want a date," he told her. "I want you to come to Palm Beach, on Tuesday. I know it's your day off."
Her eyes widened. "But that could be all day."
He held up his hands, as if to ward her off. "Please don't tell me again how expensive you are, Relle."
